God’s protection or divine protection is one of the promises God gives us in His Word. That means, as children of God, we are assured of God’s protection.
The Bible (God’s Word) is full of supernatural accounts of God’s protecting His people.
However, some protections that the Bible mentions are not automatic. They have a requirement or a condition attached to them that we have to do.
Even salvation – protection from the penalty of our sin – which was fully paid for us on the cross has a requirement to be met by humankind.
To receive salvation, a person needs to believe and confess that they believe in and receive Jesus Christ.
… if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:9-10)
Accessing God’s Protection
1. Ask for protection from God
One of the ways to receive protection from God is by praying and asking for it.
In Matthew 7:7, it is written, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
You can ask for God to protect you. David would ask for protection from God in the book of Psalms.
Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies; In You I take shelter (protection) [Psalms 143:9]
I have come to you for protection; don’t let me be disgraced. Save me and rescue me, for you do what is right. [Psalms 71:1-2]
It is also interesting to note in the Lord’s Prayer, we are to ask God to “deliver us from evil”.
So, go right ahead and pray for God to protect you, your family, your friends, your business, etc.
2. Obey God
In Deuteronomy 28, God gives promises of blessings on His children if they obey his voice and diligently observe His commandments and Curses if they do not.
Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God: (Deuteronomy 28:1-2)
There are 9 verses that spell out the blessings which would be summarized as protection from barrenness in their bodies, land and our herds; enemies; lack; famine; sickness, disease, infirmity and plagues; unfruitful labor; etc.
Because Job was a righteous man who feared God and shunned evil, God had put a hedge of protection around him, his household, and around all that he had on every side until satan was given permission to ‘touch’ him. (Job 1 and 2)
For us to receive protection we have to make sure that we walk and live in obedience to the commands of God.
