Gratitude and content are significant aspects of the Christian faith for several reasons. Firstly, they help recognize and acknowledge God’s blessings, goodness, and generosity. We believe in a loving and gracious God who is merciful and continually good. Also, being grateful and content is a way to honor God. 

Not only that, but according to science, gratitude and contentment improve physical health, increases self-esteem, and helps one sleep better. 

In our last post, we did part 1 of “How We Can Cultivate a Heart of Gratitude and Contentment.” 

(Read  Part 1 on our blog) In this blog post, we continue to explore more practical tips for cultivating a heart of gratitude and contentment in all circumstances. 

1. Keep a Gratitude Journal

Keeping a gratitude journal is another helpful way to cultivate gratitude and contentment. And no matter how challenging life gets, there is always something to be grateful for. 

Typically, a gratitude journal involves tracking the good things you are grateful about and writing them down. You can do it daily, after a few days, or even weekly. 

You can be grateful for simple things such as a cup of coffee, life and health, good weather, a beautiful sunset, that you have a job, etc. Gratitude and contentment enhance our lives in many ways and helps us builds positivity about life and the future.  

If you haven’t formed the habit of jotting down the things, you’re thankful for, start today. It’s an effective practical way to cultivate contentment and gratitude. 

2. Choose Gratitude and Contentment

Choosing to be content and grateful. Have you heard of, ‘Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you?’ 

It’s true. We are where we are in life because of the choices we make in life. 

We can learn gratitude and contentment by choosing to be grateful and content. 

When you make a choice to be grateful and content, you’re less likely to focus on what you don't have. You’re also able to manage a positive attitude even as you wait and look forward to that which you need in life. 

We can learn about content from Apostle Paul. In the New Testament, in the book of Philippians, he wrote the following, 

I have learned to be content, whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need and what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want (Philippians 4:11-12) 

Remember, contentment is not about settling for less, but it’s about finding joy and satisfaction in life matters, especially the ones you have no control over. 

3. Focus on the Present

One of the biggest hindrances to gratitude and contentment is dwelling on the past and worrying about the future. When we focus on the present moment, we can appreciate the blessings in our lives right now. We can enjoy life, the people and experiences that are currently in our lives without worrying about what might happen in the future.

Matthew 6:34 says, 


Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
