Listening Like the Wise: A Heart That Heeds

Listening Like the Wise: A Heart That Heeds

Proverbs 10:8 offers a sharp contrast in just a few words:

"The wise in heart will receive commands, but a prating fool will fall."

This short verse packs a timeless truth—one that speaks directly to our attitude toward instruction. Wisdom, in God's eyes, isn't simply about intelligence or age. It's a matter of the heart. The wise in heart are those who are teachable, humble, and ready to receive direction. They recognize that God often speaks through His Word, His people, and even life's everyday circumstances.

On the other hand, the prating fool is full of words but empty of wisdom.

"Prating" means to babble—talking much but saying little of value. This person resists instruction, insists on being heard, and ultimately walks a path that leads to failure.

In a culture that prizes self-expression and independence, accepting correction or submitting to guidance can be hard. But God calls us to be people who listen—not just with our ears but our hearts.

At Westside Bible Chapel, we believe in building lives on the foundation of God's truth. That starts with a willingness to hear and obey what He says. Whether it's through personal Bible study, sound preaching, or wise counsel from fellow believers, God is speaking. The question is—are we ready to receive?

How to Walk in the Wisdom of Proverbs 10:8:

• Cultivate a teachable spirit – Ask God daily to help you be open to correction and instruction.

• Make regular Bible reading a habit – God's commands are clear in His Word; spend time in it.

• Pray before reacting – A wise heart pauses before speaking or acting in haste.

• Seek godly counsel – Surround yourself with mature believers who speak truth in love.

• Speak less, listen more – Be quick to hear and slow to speak, especially when challenged.

• Submit to spiritual leadership – Honour the role of pastors, elders, and mentors who guide in truth.

God is not silent. He speaks through His Word and through those who follow Him. But only the wise in heart will truly hear.

Will you be wise, or will you fall like the fool who refuses to listen?
